Crews continue to make steady progress on the Wharton Street Revitalization project.
Over the past week, work has included:
- Completion of the storm main installation along Henry Avenue, improving drainage and stormwater management in the area
- Installation of electrical junction boxes, service conduits and service connections along Wharton Street to support upgraded power and communication infrastructure
- Installation of shallow utilities along Wharton Street
- Installation of street light post foundations along Wharton Street
A Summary of Infrastructure Improvements
But what infrastructure upgrades will we see at the end of this project? We thought we’d take a moment to outline how we are making intersections safer, upgrading aging infrastructure (road, storm, water) to be more resilient and to accommodate change, and create opportunities for more biking and walking, economic development, and places to gather. The following table summarizes the expected improvements:
INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADE | PROJECT LOCATION | CONSTRUCTION PHASE | DESCRIPTION |
Multi-use Pathway Addition | Wharton Street | Phase 1 (May – November 2025) | Provide connectivity east and west of the downtown core, outlined in the Transportation Master Plan (2025). |
Plaza and sidewalk upgrades | Henry Road, and Memorial Park | Phase 1 (May to November 2025) | Connecting downtown to Memorial Park, creating spaces to gather, celebrate and remember. Provides space for future economic development. |
Roadway upgrades | Wharton Street, Victoria Road and Kelly Ave. | Phase 1 & 2 (May – September 2025) | Renewal of aging infrastructure to continue to service existing community. |
Stormwater infrastructure upgrades | Wharton Street, Henry Road, and Victoria Road | Phase 1 & 2 (May – September 2025) | Renewal of aging infrastructure to continue to service existing community. |
Relocation of overhead power lines | Wharton Street, Victoria Road, Alley way, Rosedale Road, and Armstrong Road. | Phase 1, 2, 3 and 4 (May – November 2025) | Upgrading electrical infrastructure to increase capacity for growth and support redevelopment opportunities. |
Intersection safety improvements | Main Street and Victoria Road N | Phase 2 (July – September 2025) | Enhance safety for pedestrians, by slowing traffic at the intersection. |
Water infrastructure upgrades | Victoria Road | Phase 2 (July – September 2025) | Renewal of aging infrastructure to continue to service existing community. |
