Wharton Street Revitalization Project Update – September 19

Work on the Wharton Street Revitalization Project is moving forward on schedule, with steady progress on key upgrades both above and below ground. Crews are completing visible upgrades such as new pavers, sidewalks and other improvements that will create a more vibrant and welcoming downtown. At the same time, much of the most critical work is happening out of sight. Underground infrastructure upgrades are essential investments that our community will benefit from for decades to come.

Recent work includes:

  • Paver installation on the north side of Wharton Street and the relocated cenotaph plaza
  • Completion of the watermain tie-in at Victoria Road and Main Street
  • Storm manhole installation on Victoria Road
  • Electrical undergrounding along Victoria Road from Wharton Street to Main Street

As part of this underground work, crews replaced a section of the community’s original cast iron water main dating back to 1938. The new PVC watermain is more durable, cost-effective and better for water quality. Unlike cast iron, PVC doesn’t rust, maintains its full capacity over time and is flexible enough to resist ground movement – all of which means a safer, more reliable water system for our community.

We sincerely thank downtown businesses, residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation as we complete this important revitalization work.
